The Best Gyms in Docklands, Melbourne
If you live or work in Docklands, finding the right gym can feel surprisingly complicated. The precinct has grown dramatically over the past decade, and so has the number of training options available, from big commercial chains to boutique studios to hotel fitness facilities that most locals don't even know exist.
I've trained in and around Docklands for years. Here's an honest look at what's available, who each option suits, and why I chose The Field House at 1 Hotel Melbourne as my base for personal training sessions.
The Docklands Gym Landscape
Docklands sits between the CBD and Port Melbourne, and the fitness options in the area reflect that mix — there's something for every type of mover.
Here's a breakdown of the main options:
Goodlife Health Club — Docklands
Goodlife is one of the more established commercial gyms in the area. It's well-equipped, clean, and staffed during peak hours. For people who want a straightforward, no-frills gym membership with access to weights, cardio equipment and group classes, Goodlife is a solid choice.
Best for: People who want a standard gym membership with plenty of equipment and regular opening hours.
Worth knowing: Like any large commercial gym, it gets busy during the 6–8 am and 5:30–7 pm windows. If you work flexible hours, it's a much better experience mid-morning or midday.
Push! Fitness Docklands
Push! is a popular boutique gym in Docklands known for a more community-driven atmosphere than the bigger chains. It has a good reputation for high-quality equipment and a welcoming vibe — particularly for people who find large commercial gyms intimidating or impersonal.
Best for: People who want something smaller and more community-focused than a big chain.
RekDek — Lorimer Street
RekDek is a solid all-rounder at 50 Lorimer Street. The facility includes a fully equipped gym, swimming pool, steam room, and sauna — useful if recovery and wellness facilities matter to you alongside training. It also offers a range of group fitness classes.
Best for: People who want gym + pool + recovery facilities under one roof.
Buluk Park Outdoor Gym
Often overlooked, the outdoor gym at Buluk Park is one of the better free outdoor training spaces in Melbourne. It has high bars, low bars, battle ropes, a ropes course, and functional training structures. It's exposed to the elements, obviously, but for early morning sessions on a clear Melbourne day, it's hard to beat.
Best for: People who enjoy outdoor training and want a free, well-equipped option for bodyweight and functional work.
The Field House — 1 Hotel Melbourne
This is where I run personal training sessions in Docklands, and it's a different category entirely.
The Field House is the fitness facility inside 1 Hotel Melbourne at 9 Maritime Place — a luxury hotel that opened in the Docklands precinct. It's fitted with Technogym equipment (one of the world's leading performance equipment brands), and the environment is about as far from a crowded commercial gym as you can get.
It's private. Boutique. Completely free of the noise, queues, and distractions that come with a large public gym. When we're working in there, you have the space and focus to do your best training — not to work around other people's schedules or wait for equipment.
Best for: People who want an elite training environment for 1:1 personal training. Not a drop-in public gym — access is through private training sessions.
So Which Gym in Docklands Is Right for You?
The honest answer is it depends on what you're actually trying to achieve.
If you want flexibility, convenience, and the ability to train independently at any time, a commercial gym membership at Goodlife or Push! makes sense. You'll have access to equipment, classes, and a facility you can use on your own schedule.
If you want results, measurable, consistent, and personalised, that's a different conversation.
The majority of people who join commercial gyms don't achieve the results they're after. Not because the gym is bad, but because training without a structured program, expert guidance, and accountability is genuinely hard to do consistently. Most people don't have the background to know what to prioritise, how to progress, or when to push and when to recover.
That's where working with a personal trainer changes everything.
Why I Train Clients at The Field House
I chose The Field House as my Docklands base for a few reasons.
First, the environment is exceptional. Working in a world-class facility with Technogym equipment means we have access to everything we need to get results — regardless of what your goal is. Strength and muscle development, fat loss, movement quality, performance, injury prevention — the equipment and space support all of it.
Second, the setting matters more than most people realise. When you train in a private, distraction-free space, you actually train better. You're not waiting for equipment. You're not self-conscious. You're not half-focused on what's happening around you. That focus compounds over weeks and months into real results.
Third, it's genuinely accessible. Docklands is a short walk or tram from the CBD, Southern Cross Station, and much of Melbourne's inner north and west. If you live in Docklands or work anywhere near the city, training here fits into your week without adding a commute problem.
What Personal Training at The Field House Looks Like
I work with clients on a 1:1 and 2:1 basis. Every program is built entirely around you — your goals, your body, your schedule, your history.
No generic programming. No sessions that feel like you could have found the workout on YouTube. Just focused, expert coaching backed by more than 10 years of experience and a background in elite sport and Biomedicine.
Sessions cover whatever is most relevant to where you are and where you want to go — whether that's building strength, improving how your body moves, losing body fat, improving your athletic performance, or all of the above over time.
Spots at Docklands are limited because I keep my client load intentionally small. That's how you get genuine attention and genuine results.
